The Testimonial Trap: How to Stop Forgetting and Start Collecting Social Proof

| Flourish Monthly

You know that little jolt of joy when someone messages you, "This was exactly what I needed!" or leaves a glowing review without even being asked?

That’s gold! That’s social proof!

And too often, it disappears into the digital ether because we forget to save it.

Why Testimonials Matter

Let’s cut to it: people trust people. A beautifully written sales page is great, but a real quote from a real human? That’s what builds confidence.

Whether it’s a Google review, a DM, a comment, or a quick sentence from an email, testimonials work because they prove you’re not just good at what you do: you’re good for them.

The Trap: Why We Forget to Collect Them

It’s not that you don’t have testimonials. It’s that they often show up when you least expect them.

You’re in the middle of five other things, you read the kind words, you smile, and you move on. Poof. Another piece of gold left floating in the feed.

How to Start Collecting Testimonials (Without Overcomplicating It)

Here’s how to make collecting social proof a consistent (and dare we say, fun?) part of your marketing routine:

1. Create a Testimonials Folder
Yes, a literal folder. On your phone. In your email. In Google Drive. Anywhere you can drop screenshots or copy/paste kind words.

2. Screenshot Everything
When someone sends praise via text, DM, or comment—screenshot it! No need to overthink. You can sort and tidy it later.

3. Use a Simple Form
Create a basic feedback or testimonial form you can send after a project or purchase. Make it easy. Ask 2-3 questions max. Bonus: use the answers in case studies or social posts.

4. Ask (Nicely!)
Don’t be afraid to request a testimonial. People love sharing a good experience—sometimes they just need a nudge. Pro tip: ask when the positive momentum is high (right after the win!).

5. Reuse It Often
Sprinkle testimonials throughout your marketing: websites, emails, IG captions, case studies, even in your proposals or sales calls.

Because if you’re not showing people what others are saying about you, they’re missing a big part of the picture.

6. Prioritize Google Reviews
If you’re only collecting testimonials in DMs and emails, you’re missing a chance to boost your visibility and credibility.

Google reviews show up when someone searches for your business, which means they help build trust and improve your SEO (yes, Google likes it when people say nice things about you).

Make it easy for happy clients to leave a review:

  • Send a follow-up message with a direct link to your Google review form

  • Create a QR code you can drop into thank-you emails, receipts, or your site

  • Build it into your offboarding or post-purchase routine

No tech headaches required; just a simple system you can stick to. The key? Make it part of your flow so it never falls through the cracks.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need 1,000 reviews to prove your value. You just need a few solid, sincere words from happy clients or customers and a system for saving them.

Start small. Save the next kind comment you get. Then another. Then another.

Because social proof isn’t just a "nice to have." It’s one of the most powerful tools in your Flourish Marketing Toolbox.
