The Art of the Post-Networking Follow-Up

| Flourish Monthly

So you’ve rocked that networking event, had a fruitful one-on-one meeting, or perhaps just wrapped up an inspiring consultation. You’re feeling great and you’re armed with a pocket full of business cards. Now what? It’s time to elevate your networking game by mastering the art of follow-up. Nurturing connections is the most important part of networking, but people often forget to do it! Let’s dive in to how you can stand above the crowd with a simple little email.

Email or Thank You Note

Don’t underestimate the power of a personalized email or handwritten thank-you note! It’s the perfect opportunity to express gratitude for a person’s time, reinforce your interest in further collaboration, and keep the conversation going. And it only takes a few minutes! Here’s what you can include:

  • Extend an invitation for another meeting or upcoming event
  • Share a valuable resource or tip that might benefit them
  • Facilitate introductions by connecting them with another professional in your network
  • Provide additional information about your company, product, or service to keep them engaged.

Give First

Forbes recommends our favorite strategy to use, no matter what the situation: Give first. “What’s important is to seek out opportunities in which you can help someone with a need they have. … Most people are wired with a reciprocity mentality; continue to do this, and you’ll grow a positive reputation as someone who pays it forward. People will be attracted to you and will want to help you in return.” During your meeting (be it speed networking or one-on-one), did your new contact mention a need overtly or in passing? Become the person who helps people, and they’ll want to help you in return. You can do this in your follow-up email! If your new contact needs a landscaper, connect them with one you know. Not only are you nurturing the connection between you two, but you’re actively participating in your relationship.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

Organize and streamline your follow-up process by using a CRM tool. If you’re like the rest of us and the only thing standing between you and that follow-up email is adding it to your to-do list, a CRM is perfect for you! It enables you to track your contacts, set reminders for follow-ups, and maintain an overview of your networking efforts. It can be super useful for your business outside of networking, too! Whether it’s scheduling a follow-up call or sending a personalized message, a CRM can be a game-changer in nurturing your relationships effectively.

Social Media Shoutouts

Social media can be one of the most effective marketing and networking tools in your toolbelt! Especially when it comes to following-up after an event or meeting. Here are some reasons to give someone some love on social media:

  • It shows your followers you are connected with other professionals
  • It makes the person you met with feel good
  • Their followers will also see your post

If you haven’t worked with the person you’re sending a shoutout to, it’s okay to say you had a great coffee and got to know them. Say something you learned about them and their business and tag them!

Beyond a shoutout, connecting with the person on social media can be helpful, too. LinkedIn recommends this because it will “help you stay updated on their activities, achievements, and interests, and also give you an opportunity to interact with them online.” Connecting with someone on social media can help you know, for example, that they celebrated a birthday recently. Wishing that person a happy birthday is another way to follow up with them, even if you haven’t seen each other recently!
