Stop Talking Into the Void: How to Build Real Community on Social Media

| Flourish Monthly

You know that feeling when you post something thoughtful, clever, or helpful and all you hear in return is crickets? Not a like. Not a comment. Not even your mom chiming in with a “proud of you, sweetie.”

You’re not alone.

A lot of small business owners are doing all the right things on social media, but it still feels like they’re talking into the void. That’s not your fault. But there is something you can do about it.

If you want people to engage with your content, the first step is to remember: social media was made for connection, not broadcasting. The businesses that are thriving online aren’t necessarily the ones with the flashiest graphics or most polished reels. They’re the ones who create conversation.

Here’s how to start doing that:

1. Don’t Just Inform—Invite

It’s easy to fall into the trap of using your posts to tell people things. But what if you used them to ask?

Try ending your next post with a question that’s easy to answer. Think low-effort but relevant:

  • "What’s your go-to fall drink?"

  • "Which of these mistakes have YOU made before?"

  • "Tell me I’m not the only one who..."

This turns your post from a monologue into a dialogue.

2. Make Your Audience Feel Seen

When people feel like you "get" them, they engage. Simple as that. So focus less on impressing and more on relating. Use language your audience actually uses. Share moments that feel familiar. And don’t be afraid to show the human side of your business; messy middle and all.

3. Create Content That Serves

The best community-building content teaches something helpful, solves a problem, or gives someone that little spark of "Oh wow, I needed that."

That could be:

  • A how-to tip

  • A mindset shift

  • A story they can learn from

  • A behind-the-scenes peek that builds trust

If it helps them, it brings them closer to you.

4. Show Up in the Comments (Theirs and Yours)

If someone comments on your post? Reply. Like it. Keep the convo going.

And if you want to build new connections, go leave thoughtful comments on their stuff, too. It’s one of the most overlooked ways to build community; and it works.

(If that sounds exhausting, Social Sidekick was literally made for this. We can help you engage in the comments and local FB groups without burning out.)

5. Remember: Algorithms Love Actual Connection

It’s not just about warm fuzzies. The more people comment and engage with your posts, the more platforms like Facebook and Instagram show your content to others. So yes, comments = community and visibility.

Final Thoughts

If it feels like you’ve been doing all the posting but none of the connecting, take a breath. This isn’t about shouting louder. It’s about showing up with curiosity, care, and consistency.
