Our 2024 Word of the Year: Community

2023 is coming to an end and like many people, it has us thinking about what we’ve accomplished in the past 12 months. Here are a few things Flourish has done this year:

Growth. Flourish Marketing continues to grow! After 2 years of rapid growth in 2021 and 2022, we deliberately slowed down a bit to provide higher quality services to our clients. 

Focus. We’re getting even more clear about the people we want to serve: small business and entrepreneurs. We’re here for the people who get up every morning and create something… people who see a need and are determined to fill it. Those are “our” people. 

Engagement. We’ve seen a shift this year from simply creating a “fire hose” of content on social media, to creating a customer journey that helps people know, like, and trust your business. 

Community. No small business marketing plan is complete without networking. We see a tremendous need for in-person networking in our communities and are working hard to respond! We’ve grown from 2 Flourish Networking groups in January to 10 at the beginning of December, and more to come in 2024.


So, what will you see from Flourish next year? 

Our 2024 word of the year is community. We’re working hard to build a community of small businesses and professionals who help each other, and their communities, grow and thrive. You’ll continue to see new groups form, and our current ones learn and grow together. 

But community isn’t just about small businesses helping each other. In recent years, people trust advertising and traditional marketing tactics less and less. I read a book this month called Belonging to the Brand by Mark Schaefer. Here’s what he has to say about the state of marketing today: 

“The future of marketing involves no discernable marketing. At least not in a traditional sense. In fact, if you force any hard sales tactics or marketing spin on your community, people will run for the doors, and you’ll fail.” 

So where does that leave your small business? We have to tell people what we have to offer them, right? 

People today are lonelier than ever, and are desperate for ways to connect and belong. Businesses that can provide an opportunity for connection will have an advantage. In 2024, we’ll be exploring new ways to help our small business clients build community. We can’t wait to see what happens next!
