Networking: The Fast Track to Building Your Business Community
Running a small business means you’re a jack-of-all-trades - one minute you’re making executive decisions, the next you’re handling customer service, and then you’re taking out the trash. With so much on your plate, marketing can often take a backseat. But here’s a little secret for business growth that’s not only effective but also fun: networking. Before you roll your eyes or think you don’t have time, hear us out! Networking isn’t just about exchanging business cards and awkward small talk; it’s all about making genuine connections, building your reputation, and having a good time while you’re at it. It’s a game-changer that connects you with the right people, boosts your credibility, and opens doors you didn’t even know existed. Let’s make networking your new favorite business tool!
Why should you care about networking? Here’s the scoop:
Quick Connections: It’s the fastest way to link up with other professionals. In a matter of minutes, you can exchange contact details with potential clients, partners, or mentors who can offer insights, advice, or opportunities that you might have never encountered otherwise.
Social Proof: Networking is a chance to build credibility for your products or services. When you connect with other respected professionals, their endorsement of your business adds a layer of trust and authenticity that no amount of advertising can achieve. It’s like getting a gold star from the cool kids!
Support System: Think of networking as your very own cheer squad. You gain a personal network of like-minded individuals who can offer advice, share experiences, or just provide a sympathetic ear when you need to vent. Running a small business can be isolating, but having a tribe of fellow entrepreneurs makes the journey less lonely and more enjoyable.
Promoters: By networking, you create a virtual sales force of people who will promote your business simply because they like you. These connections often become your biggest advocates, spreading the word about your products or services far and wide.
Community Ties: Networking connects you to your local community - other businesses, nonprofits, schools, and even local government. This not only helps your business become a known entity in your area but also opens doors to collaborations, partnerships, and community projects that can enhance your brand’s reputation and reach.
Human Interaction: Let’s face it: sometimes you need a reason to get dressed, leave the house, and talk to real people. Networking events offer a refreshing change from the daily grind of emails and phone calls. They provide a chance to engage in real conversations, share a laugh, and genuine connections that can lead to lasting relationships. We’ve even met some of our closest, lifelong friends through networking!
Hopefully we’ve convinced you to make networking a priority! But where should you get started? At Flourish, we recommend three different types of networking for your business:
- Open Networking. Think Chamber of Commerce. Everyone can join, so you’ll meet a larger and more diverse group of people and become an active part of your community.
- Referral Groups. These are typically composed of one member per business category. You’ll build a close-knit group of people who are dedicated to helping each other grow. This is what our networking groups look like!
- Give Back. Whether it’s volunteering, working with nonprofits, or participating in community events, giving back helps others and increases your visibility in the community. Plus, it just feels good and helps create balance in your life.
We believe in networking so much that we’ve made it a cornerstone of our business model. Our local referral groups are fun, supportive, and designed to help you grow your business while making meaningful connections. Plus, some of our best friends and business partners came from these groups!
In a Flourish Networking group, everything we do serves our mission, so there aren’t a lot of arbitrary rules or requirements; just the minimum to make the group effective for members. To help everyone get to know each other better, members have the opportunity each week to give a presentation on a topic of their choosing. This can be about business, personal, volunteer work, or whatever the member chooses. We also provide trainings each week. Networking skills aren’t taught in school, after all! Trainings are designed to teach members not only how the group works, but also to develop skills that can be used anywhere.

We like this August event to be casual and community-oriented, so bring a friend or family member and join us at Awakening in Oak Grove for drinks and good food. You may even win a door prize!
