How to Build a Marketing Plan You’ll Actually Stick To (Spoiler: No 37-tab spreadsheet required.)
You know that one drawer in your kitchen full of takeout menus, rubber bands, and a single rogue battery? For a lot of business owners, their “marketing plan” lives in the same chaotic spirit.
They meant to make a plan. They want to have a plan. But instead, they’re winging it week to week, posting whatever sounds halfway clever in the moment, and praying it somehow turns into leads.
Sound familiar?
Let’s change that.
Step 1: Get Clear on What You’re Actually Trying to Do
Not every post needs to sell something. (In fact, most shouldn’t.) But your marketing does need a goal. Do you want to:
- Book more calls?
- Grow your email list?
- Get people into your storefront?
- Stay top of mind so your name is the one they remember?
Your content should lead people somewhere; even if that “somewhere” is just getting to know you a little better.
Step 2: Pick the Right Platforms (Not All of Them)
You do not need to be everywhere. You just need to be where your people are; and where you’ll actually show up. Choose 1–2 platforms that make sense for your audience and your brain.
If you love words? Email might be your zone.
If you’re visual? Instagram or Pinterest.
If you can’t stand any of it? That’s cool—we can help with that too.
Step 3: Repeat After Me: Repeat Your Content
One of the biggest reasons marketing plans crash and burn is that people think they need to reinvent the wheel every day.
You don’t.
Create repeatable content themes. For example:
- Mondays: Quick tip
- Wednesdays: Behind-the-scenes
- Fridays: Client love or review
Suddenly you’ve got a rhythm. You’re not staring at a blank screen. You're plugging into a plan.
Step 4: Plan Just Enough Ahead to Avoid Chaos
We’re not talking about mapping out the next fiscal year. (Unless that excites you—in which case, carry on, spreadsheet wizard.)
Start with 2–4 weeks. Just enough to get out of reactive mode, but not so much that you lock yourself into content that feels stale by the time it posts.
Step 5: Give Yourself Room to Pivot
A plan should be flexible; not a marketing prison. If something isn’t working? Tweak it. If something’s resonating? Do more of it.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s consistency with room to breathe.
TL;DR (aka you didn’t read this blog and just skipped to here…)
Building a marketing plan doesn’t have to be overwhelming, over-complicated, or over-engineered. You just need to:
- Know where you’re going
- Pick platforms that make sense
- Create repeatable rhythms
- Stay flexible enough to shift when needed
