Google Business Profile Basics: Why It Matters (and What to Do With It)

| Flourish Monthly

Let’s guess how this probably went.

At some point, you claimed your Google Business Profile, filled out the basics, uploaded a logo you vaguely remember cropping at midnight, and thought, “Perfect. Done.” And honestly? Fair enough. Most business owners treat their Google profile like a one-time setup task. Something to check off the list and move on from.

The problem is, Google doesn’t really treat it that way; and neither do your customers.

While you’ve been busy running your business, your Google Business Profile has quietly become one of the first things people see when they look you up. In many cases, they’ll see it before they ever click on your website. Which means whether you realize it or not, your profile is often making a first impression on your behalf.

No pressure or anything 😅

Why Your Google Business Profile Matters More Than You Think

When someone searches for a local business, Google is trying to figure out which businesses seem the most trustworthy, active, and relevant. That decision is influenced by a handful of simple things: whether your profile is complete, whether you have recent reviews, whether your photos look current, and whether there are signs the business is actually active.

And yes, people notice those things too.

Think about your own habits for a second. If you search for a local service and one business has updated photos, fresh reviews, accurate information, and recent activity while another looks untouched since 2021, which one feels more trustworthy? Most people make that decision almost instantly, often before they’ve even clicked through to a website.

That’s why this matters. Local searches usually come with high intent. People searching for a photographer, contractor, bakery, or marketing company in their area often aren’t casually browsing…they’re actively looking for someone to contact. Sometimes the journey from “search” to “call” takes all of five minutes.

And whether business owners realize it or not, people are making assumptions very quickly during that process. Sparse reviews can make a business feel inactive. Outdated photos can make it feel forgotten. Missing hours or incomplete information create tiny moments of hesitation, and in marketing, hesitation matters more than most people think.

On the flip side, an active, updated profile quietly builds confidence. It signals that the business is legitimate, paying attention, and still actively serving customers. It makes someone feel more comfortable reaching out before you’ve ever spoken a word to them.

That’s a pretty powerful job for something many businesses haven’t looked at in months.

The good news is that this doesn’t require some complicated SEO strategy or hours of technical work every week. In fact, most businesses don’t need to “master Google.” They just need to stop ignoring the visibility they already have sitting there.

The Small Things That Quietly Move the Needle

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make with their Google profile is treating it like a setup instead of a tool. They create it once, fill in the information, and then never touch it again. Over time, things start looking stale. Photos get outdated. Reviews go unanswered. Information changes but never gets updated.

Not disastrous. Just… neglected.

The businesses that tend to perform best are usually doing very simple things consistently. They’re asking for reviews on a regular basis instead of once every six months when they suddenly remember. They’re uploading real photos from current projects, events, or day-to-day business life. They’re posting occasional updates and keeping their information accurate.

And before you start thinking this means you now need perfectly branded graphics and a full-time content plan for your Google listing, let’s all collectively take a deep breath 😅 That’s not what this is.

Most customers are not expecting a curated masterpiece. In fact, real and current usually outperform overly polished anyway. A quick photo from a recent project, a team picture, a snapshot of your workspace, or a short business update is often more effective than something that feels stiff or overly produced.

That consistency matters because it signals two important things at once: it tells Google the business is active, and it tells potential customers that someone is paying attention behind the scenes.

And the best part? Most of this can be done using content you already have. A social media post can become a profile update. A client photo can become fresh gallery content. A quick thank-you reply to a review takes less time than reheating your coffee for the third time that morning.

This doesn’t need to become another overwhelming marketing task. It just needs to become part of the rhythm of keeping your business visible and current.

If your Google profile has been collecting a little digital dust lately, start small this week:

  • Ask one happy client for a review
  • Upload three recent photos
  • Post one short update

That’s it. Momentum starts with movement.

And if you’d rather not keep track of all these moving pieces yourself, that’s exactly where Flourish can help. From maintaining visibility to keeping your business active online, we help make sure the marketing tools you already have are actually working for you.

Because you don’t need to master every marketing platform out there.

You just need to stop leaving the good ones untouched.
