DIY Marketing: Which Social Platforms Should I Use?
There are a lot of places to show up online these days. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, Threads, X (RIP Twitter)... oh, and don’t forget your email list.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed about where you should be posting as a small business or solopreneur, you’re not alone. The good news? You don’t have to be everywhere. In fact, you probably shouldn’t be. (Unless you’ve recently cloned yourself. If so, congrats—and please share your secret.)
Let’s break it down and help you figure out where your time is actually worth spending.

First, Know This: One Size Does Not Fit All
The best platform for you depends on three things:
- Your audience – Where do they actually hang out?
- Your content style – Do you like being on video, writing, designing, or teaching?
- Your goals – Are you trying to build community? Drive traffic? Sell products?
When you know who you're talking to, how you like to show up, and what you're trying to achieve, your choices get a whole lot clearer.
A Quick Look at the Main Players
Instagram
Great for: Visual brands, lifestyle content, behind the scenes peeks, service based businesses.
Audience: 18–34, heavy mobile use, favors shortform Reels and Stories.
Why it works: Still one of the best places to build brand recognition and show personality. (Also a great excuse to use all those Canva templates you hoarded.)
Facebook
Great for: Local businesses, communities, groups, older audiences (35+).
Audience: Skews older than Instagram, still very active for event promotion and recommendations.
Why it works: Facebook Groups and business pages can foster loyal engagement and it’s still a strong ad platform. Plus, your aunt is probably already sharing your posts.
TikTok
Great for: Bold brands, educators, entertainers, product demos, short form video pros.
Audience: Gen Z and younger millennials (16–34), but growing with older users.
Why it works: Virality is possible, even with a small following. Algorithms reward authenticity and creativity over perfection.
LinkedIn
Great for: B2B businesses, consultants, coaches, thought leaders.
Audience: Professionals and decision makers.
Why it works: People expect longer-form, insightful content. It’s less saturated than other platforms and favors thought leadership. (Bonus tip: the bar for humor is low; so your dad jokes might actually kill.)
Pinterest
Great for: Bloggers, creators, e-commerce, DIY, wellness, weddings, recipes.
Audience: 70% women, with strong U.S. usage.
Why it works: It’s a search engine, not just a social platform. Pins have a long shelf life and drive traffic over time.
YouTube
Great for: Tutorials, long-form content, visual storytelling, how tos.
Audience: All ages, with a huge presence across demographics.
Why it works: Owned by Google, so content is super SEO friendly. Videos keep working for you long after they're posted.
Threads & X (formerly Twitter)
These are more niche right now. If your brand is commentary heavy, news based, or you thrive on witty hot takes, you might consider dipping in. But most small businesses don’t need to prioritize these unless your audience is already there. (If you’re crushing it with memes, by all means, carry on.)
So, Which One Should You Choose?
Pick one or two platforms where:
- Your ideal customers are active
- You can realistically post consistently
- The format fits your style (if you hate video, don’t force it!)
Then commit to showing up with intention. Learn the platform, test your content, and don’t panic if it takes a little time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is your dream audience.
Final Thoughts
You don’t have to be viral to be successful. You just need to be visible in the right place. With a little strategy (and a lot less pressure to "do it all"), you can make DIY marketing work for you, not exhaust you.
