DIY Marketing Made Easy: Discover Who Your Ideal Customers Really Are
Let’s be honest: when you’re doing your own marketing, it’s tempting to try to speak to everyone. After all, the more people you reach, the better your chances of making a sale... right?
Not exactly.
Trying to market to "everyone" usually means your message connects with no one. That’s why knowing your ideal customer is one of the most important (and often skipped) first steps in any DIY marketing strategy.

Why Ideal Customer Clarity Matters
When you know exactly who you're talking to, everything else gets easier:
- You stop second-guessing every post, email, or offer.
- You write in a way that actually resonates.
- You start attracting more of the right people—the ones who need what you do and are happy to pay for it.
Without this clarity, it’s like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks.
So, Who IS Your Ideal Customer?
Spoiler: it’s not just “anyone who needs what I offer.” That’s way too vague.
Instead, get specific. Ask yourself:
- Who do I love working with?
- What problems or goals do they have?
- What stage of life or business are they in?
- What values do they hold?
- Where do they hang out (online and in real life)?
And most importantly: what makes you uniquely equipped to help them?
A Quick Exercise to Get Clear
Grab a pen and paper (or the notes app on your phone) and answer these prompts:
- Describe your favorite past customer or client. What made them great?
- List 5 traits or habits that your ideal customer has.
- Name the biggest challenge they face that your product or service solves.
- Where do they go for information or inspiration? (Think: podcasts, social platforms, in-person events.)
- What transformation are they looking for?
Once you jot this down, you’ll have a simple snapshot of who you're really trying to reach. And with that clarity, creating content, crafting offers, and showing up online will feel way less overwhelming.

Final Thoughts
You don’t need a fancy marketing degree to connect with the right people. You just need a little intention, a dash of curiosity, and the willingness to dig deeper than surface-level demographics.
Because when you know who you’re speaking to? Your message hits harder, your marketing feels easier, and your business grows with more ease.
And that’s the kind of DIY marketing we’re all about.
